The BARBARA BIDDLE TROPHY was donated by Barbara and is awarded every year to Katikati Home Industries ‘CHAMPION FAMILY.’ Barbara passed away recently after a very full life. She is remembered for her service to family, friends, and the community. Barbara loved adventure and helping others. Her skills were to encourage others to be involved, as she did on School Committees, in Sea Cadets, as a Community Policewoman, and also as an International Businesswoman. Adventures included inner tubing down rivers, climbing to the summit of Mt Ruapehu, Scuba diving, Free fall parachuting, Triathlons and much more. Barbara loved gardening and cooking - Sue Couper recalls her whipping up 3 batches of scones, getting the family to gather wild Gooseberries and Raspberries, then bottling and making jam - all while on holiday at Paradise, near Glenorchy. Barbara was respected for her career as Footman at Government House, Wellington, serving leaders of the world In her 60's, Barbara bought her own horse, Boomer, and a horse float- travelling to and entering Shows around the country. Next step was a camper van and travelling for 6 months, exploring NZ. With Barbara’s love of life and home, she volunteered at the Katikati A&P Show assisting with the Home Industries Competition. Barbara kindly donated the ‘Barbara Biddle Trophy’ which is awarded to the ‘CHAMPION FAMILY’ in the Katikati Home Industries Competition. Barbara has been an inspiration to many with her ‘can do’ and attitude Thank you, Barbara, you will be sorely missed across the community. Our A&P Hall has received an incredible upgrade! Here is a bit of a background about Tina, the school and the stage from Tina herself: “The Tina Peet School Of Dance opened in 1972 in Tauranga. A move to Katikati in 1978 meant dance lessons were commenced in the dining/family room at our Tui Place home, followed by a new dance studio at the back of the garage. Then a large studio at Wharawhara Road. “ As the school grew, dance parents got together and formed the Katikati Highland and National Dance Club. This club resurrected the Highland and National dance competitions at the KatiKati A and P Show. “The school continued growing and performed on a very regular basis. One day I was chatting to one of the dads (Warren Clark) about my dream of getting a portable stage. He came back to me several weeks later with a diagram scribbled on a piece of paper. How about this Mrs Peet? I was speechless, overwhelmed and excited all at the same time. “Warren organised for Harpers Engineering and other friends to build it. “It was a dream come true, with hundreds of displays, lots of A&P Shows, concerts etc the stage was well used. Fifty teaching years later (36 in KatiKati) the school has now officially closed. “The stage now belongs to the Katikati A and P Society. Hopefully it will continue to see hundreds and hundreds more dancers and performers enjoying it.” Shiny as a new pin - the A&P hall has had repairs and a new paint of coat to the roof thanks to a grant of $14,149 from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Facilities in the Community Fund and matched with $16,549 funding from Grassroots Trust. This follows on from another grant from Grassroots Trust in 2020 which paid for the outside walls of the hall to have a fresh lick of paint. Thanks to Tallman Painting and KiwiSpout for doing the work on the roof!
The A&P Hall is one of the oldest in Katikati and the committee is working hard to modernise the interior so that it is a facility that can be used more by the community. The hall and show grounds are in regular use by the Katikati Wrestling Club, the Friday night Farmers' market and various other markets. The A&P committee were devastated when the bad weather caused the cancellation of this year's show once again, having cancelled the previous two years due to COVID-19. The next show in February 2024 will be the 99th and the committee is looking at extending the show into a two-day event, as it always used to be, with equestrian events planned for the Sunday. "We're planning on making the 99th show the best yet, and work is already underway for the big one in 2025 which will be the 100th show," said Katikati A&P Committee President, Louellen Davies. |
